I am not a very “forceful” kinda gal. I usually make suggestions, or recommendations.
If I am upset I use the term “disappointed”
Well, I am disappointed today.
I wrote this article for the PTPA on #felfies.
I wanted to encourage families to understand the value of supporting the #felfie and the small farmer, or even the urban farmer (yes, you with a tomato plant on your patio)
But I am gentle.
Here is my concern tho, and why I am loving the #felfie, and doing those chicken Vlogs and doing my best to get you hooked on homesteading.
We are losing touch with our food. We don’t look or care when it comes from, or how it is made. Our kids don’t understand that a chicken on the dinner table is actually a CHICKEN!
We toss more food that has gone bad than we eat. We buy out of season strawberries as regularly as we breath. It has become commonplace, despite the expense (both to your pocket book and the environment)
I encourage you to choose wisely when you make a purchase, and to purchase quality, not quantity. The same goes when it comes to your food.
In fact, it might be even more important.
I want you to find out how, and where the food on your plate comes from, and I want you to go there and support the people who are providing it for you.
I want you to start appreciating what you have, and how you use it.
I want you to find a way to grow food for your own table, and maybe even enough to share with you neighbours.
WHY?
Well, I think we have lost touch with this part of our world, and by bringing it front and centre, it will become important again. Being able to raise kids who are self sufficient (no, that does not mean making spaghetti from a jar) is a gift we can give the future.
Kids who understand the farm to fork concept. Kids who have green thumbs. Kids who see healthy food storage concepts (canning party anyone?)
By understanding the process, we can get back to what it is really all about.
The food.
Good food. Fresh food. Available food. Local food.
We should know the true costs of our choices, food, bedsheets, everything, and we should make it a priority to teach that to our kids.
Otherwise people will stop caring, and then we are really in trouble.
Small farms, local business and backyard crops are the cool new trend. . . lets make it stick. Support the #felfie and learn the art of farming. Find a way, any way, to start contributing. It may not be my way, but there is some opportunity out there for you to help and become a #felfie contributor!
Trust me, you will eat better because of it.
