Oh boy, have we done our time negotiating bedtime! With three kids we have experienced pretty much ALL of these!
Our kids are HUGE readers which means that after the teeth brushing, flossing and “one more drink of water please” they beg for a book.
Now, personally I find it hard to say no to that. Much like telling your kids NOT to snack on broccoli before dinner because they will ruin their appetite. Reading before bed is a “healthy habit” that we want to encourage in our kids. But when it gets to be “one more chapter” at half an hour PAST their bedtime you suddenly find yourself getting angry over the good things.
We will have our kids start reading to us, and then we will take over. While books read with excitement are fabulous to listen to, they aren’t that great for dozing off to, so I will slow my breathing, and my words, and lower my voice and the stories gentle lull our littles to sleep.
Now, this usually means I am lulled to sleep too, but I guess that is just a job hazard to be expected!
There are so many ways for kids to stretch bedtime, and Netflix has them all covered.
Check out the fun info graphic below from Netflix and the results they got when they polled parents globally about what their kids would do to delay bedtime just 5 more minutes!
