Brrrr. What just happened here? In the blink of an eye we’ve gone from sunny warm days to brisk mornings, lawn covered in dew and seeing our breath as we walk to the school bus. I do love the season change, it gets me every time. Nature putting itself to bed for the winter is how I see fall, the slow and gentle bedtime routine. But this weekend it seemed to just arrive, BAM!
We had our local fair this weekend, a family event we all love. The kids enter contests for art, photography, rooster calling (yes, you read that right) and we enter canned fruits, veggies and an assortment of bounty from our garden. There are pet shows, chicken shows, zucchini rolling races and so much more. It is a weekend of outdoor fun, which is awesome when the weather cooporates and not so awesome when it doesn’t. And this was one weekend when it didn’t.
I am sick. Barely 2 weeks into school and the plague has me in it’s clutches. All I want to do is be warm, but nature has other ideas and has turned the thermostat WAY down on me. Our old house is drafty and the cool damp fall air is sneaking in and chilling me to my core. I work bundled up in fuzzy socks and blankets, an full cup of tea in my cold hands. By the end of the afternoon I am DONE. Headache, stuffy nose and still cold I am so grateful for a family who loves scrambled eggs and toast for dinner.
Mom’s sick. No evening walk tonite, no trampoline jumping. It’s cuddly warm movie night tonite. Thank goodness! Blankets, pillows, jammies, stuffies and a fire crackling. Mugs of hot cocoa and chocolate chip cookies. Netflix streaming a movie we’ve all been waiting for, Zootopia. The cold melts away as we laugh and giggle at the antics of the characters, snuggled together and happy.
Even though I absolutely love the sunny warm days of summer, I think there is something to be said for the chilly nights and cozy evenings fall brings us. Reconnecting under a mountain of fuzzy blankets is not a bad thing at all.
