It’s that amazing time of year when the air is crisp and fresh, the leaves are turning beautiful hues of gold and red and the kids are busy planning Halloween costumes. I love the switch from lazy summer days to busy plans with friends and soccer games, harvesting the bounty in our garden and getting ready to tuck everyone in for winter. But there is one thing that accompanies all this awesomeness that I could do without. COLD SEASON.
I feel it coming before it actually hits. Irritable, cranky, short tempered kids. Kids who fall asleep when they get home from school, and are impossible to get up in the morning. I know it’s coming, I do my best to prepare, and then BOOM. It hits ME. NOOOO! Not ME! I’m not the one surrounded by germs at school and yet it is me who succumbs to the plague time and time again. This fall I am trying to get not only myself and the family prepped for those nasty colds by being proactive and making Vitafusion Vitamins part of our morning routine, but the house too. Not that the house gets sick, but it can help us pick up germs if I’m not on top of things. Here are some tips on how you too can prevent the rampant spread of germs in your home and family.
Disinfect Commonly-Touched Areas
Germs can linger on hard surfaces for hours or days after being contaminated, which is why it’s important to keep high traffic areas like counter tops, door knobs, sinks and faucets clean. You’ll also want to be diligent in disinfecting telephones, remote controls, door knobs and light switches.
Avoid the Spread of Germs
Germs often spread when someone touches a contaminated item and then touches their eyes, nose or mouth. When in public spaces, try to avoid touching your face with your hands as much as possible. Always make sure you wash your hands thoroughly with soap and warm water on a regular basis and keep alcohol-based hand sanitizers in your purse and in your children’s backpack for added protection.
Skip a Workout
If you feel like you might be getting sick but aren’t sure, avoid going to the gym. While it may seem like a good idea to sweat it out, your body needs all of its extra resources to fend off whatever virus or bacteria you’ve been exposed to so it’s important to save your energy.
Stay Hydrated
When feeling ill, it’s important to stay hydrated. Plenty of water and fluids may help to minimize the duration and severity of a cold or flu.

So the moral of the story folks is BE PREPARED! Wash, wash, wash your hands, keep disinfecting wipes accessible to make wiping surfaces easy. Don’t push yourself too hard, remember it takes energy to fight infection! Take a break from that run and enjoy a cup of tea to stay hydrated. We all know it’s inevitable that at least one cold will worm it’s way into our family this year, but we can at least fight back!
