I think I may have mentioned I’m a reader, a lover of the written word, particularly historical fiction or even non fiction. I lose myself in the tales of past Kings and Queens, of knights and tales of valor. There is just something about that genre that captivates me, pulling me in to that world. I equally enjoy movies and tv series in the same genre, always looking for them in guides and new releases. We don’t get local cable in our remote area, nor do we subscribe to satellite tv. We rely on Netflix for our screen time and they never fail to entertain, offering selections and new series with regularity so we often have a list of “want to see” movies and shows. This month Netflix released a series that I feel was made just for me, and I am loving it!
The new series on Netflix that has me so addicted is the story of Queen Elizabeth II and her reign, life and constant struggle between Crown and family. Aptly named The Crown, this series has me, and even my eldest daughter, hooked. We follow Elizabeth as she makes decisions, mistakes and triumphs. She is a leading lady we can both get behind, seeing her strength and commitment to a life we really could never dream of having. Not just the money, clothes, jewels and parties, but the immense weight of responsibility she assumed at such a young age with grace and style. My daughter is seeing this young woman stand tall in the face of adversity, having to prove to the world she is up to the job years before she thought she would, having lost her father, the King, so suddenly. Thrown into a career as THE diplomat of the United Kingdom, Elizabeth embraced her role as Queen of England and is still as loved and respected today as she was so many years ago.
The idea that this Queen would become a role model for my young daughter so many years after she claimed the throne is really cool. My girl doesn’t see Queen Elizabeth as an aging queen, she sees her growing up under the crown, finding her inner strength and becoming an icon like no other.
And I now have a whole box of books I have loved over the years to pass down to my budding royalist!
As I said, Netflix never fails to entertain us and this month they hit the nail on the head. The Crown captivates me and my daughter, opens conversations on being a strong woman and leader, finding courage and standing up for what you believe. We are connecting over my passion for history as my daughter discovers hers.
