Growing up in a small town in Canada was an awesome thing, we had sun in the summer, snow in the winter and rain the rest of the year. We played hide and go seek in the neighborhood and didn’t go home until the dinner bell rang. For real, we had a dinner bell that my mom would ring out the kitchen door to call us home. We weren’t worried about crime, seldom locked our doors and we knew everyone we saw in town by name. One cool thing most people don’t know is we had Canadian children’s tv shows, and they made such an impact they stayed in my memory my whole life.
One iconic show was The Friendly Giant. It featured a man who reached his hand through the window of a castle and interacted with his friends; a giraffe named Gerome and a rooster named Rusty who played a harp. This show ran for over 3000 episodes and thrilled Canadian children for years. Why am I reminiscing you ask? Well, there’s a movie just released on DVD that brought those memories of my friendly giant flooding back.
The BFG, or Big Friendly Giant is a movie based on the book by Roald Dahl about a little girl and a friendly giant. It is a movie full of magic, amazement, and fantasy, with stunning special effects and features to make the whole family fall for this kindly larger than life man.
We saw this movie when it was in theatres and immediately knew we had to own it when it came out on DVD. The story and characters are so compelling, drawing you in and making you feel part of their experiences. Each member of our family connected in some way with one character or another, each of us taking something different away from this extraordinary tale. It was impactful and a wonderful show to share with our family!
