I have raised three bouncing babies. Three BIG bouncing babies. Three hungry, fast growing babies.
Our first was a 10 pounder. She was too big to wear the newborn diapers in the hospital so the nurses went out and purchased a pack of size 1′s. She ate voraciously and slept like a dream.
And ate, and ate, and ate. I was nursing at the time and our “wee lassy” would knock back 16 ounces of milk in a feeding. And then sleep. Through the night.
But my milk never stopped. I started pumping when we were in the hospital and kept going until she was weaned. It was wonderful to be able to have the stash of milk available so that Hubby could enjoy the moments feeding and bonding with her as well.
We did the same with the next two kids, mixing breast feeding with bottles, both as a way to share the moment, but also to provide me with the rare “night off”. Each child was different in their ease of using a bottle, and we struggled to find the right “fit”, especially with our second daughter.
Babies are all different in their needs and wants when feeding. I know our first would feed fast and furious and gulp the milk as quickly as she could. Our second child would take her time and wanted a lazy feed (maybe she wanted more “mom time” being a middle child?) and our third, the smallest of the bunch changed his opinion every other day!
I was thrilled to meet new mom Hannah, a writer with me on another site, who is just settling into her first baby, a beautiful 6 week old baby girl. Hannah had the chance to test out the new Playtex Variety Pack with the Playtex VentAire or Nurser with Drop-Ins Liners bottles and was happy to share her thoughts on them! Read what Hannah had to say:
Hannah’s Review: “I was excited to try out the new bottles and nipples from Playtex as I have already been using the Playtex brand bottles and NaturaLatch nipples for feeding successfully. With the bottles I found that the new Drop-In Liners could be locked into an angled position that made them easier to hold for feeding. However, I preferred using the new VentAire bottles as they don’t produce waste as there is no liner needed, and I didn’t have to go finding a new liner when I had a bottle to fill. These bottles also felt really comfortable to hold because of their angled shape and easily graspable finger-holds.
The “NaturaLatch” nipple has been successful for feeding my little one, but I could see how an infant with a larger mouth might have a harder time latching, a complaint I’ve heard from another mom, as it doesn’t provide a lot of surface area around the tip of the nipple. For my baby with a small mouth, though, it works just fine.
I was happy to see how quickly the “Angled” nipple was taken, and that the latch seemed more solid on this nipple that seemed to reach up more easily to hit my baby’s higher palette. What I didn’t like about it, though, was that I had to check where the nipple tip was and turn the bottle a few times since the latch only works in one position, with the angled nipple towards the top of her mouth. It was also more difficult to get the last little bit of milk into the tip for my babe to finish.
The “Breastlike Shape” nipple was my favourite as it was the easiest for my little one to nurse from. It gave lots of room to latch onto all around, rather than just the room at the bottom as with the angled nipple.
When I tried to feed my baby with the “Fullsized” nipple, she cried and played with it, unable to successfully latch until I switched it for a “NaturaLatch” nipple. I think the nipple tip was just too wide for her to be comfortable with, and may work better for a baby with a larger mouth.”
Wow, Lucky Hannah! It sounds like the trial was a success! What I would have given for the chance to have the variety of nipple options like this for the kids, to be able to have a feeding system that adjusted to their needs. I believe our struggles with switching between the bottle and the breast (especially for #2) would have been reduced.
Those night where hubby spent hours attempting bottle feeding our kids would have been a breeze had he been able to satisfy our little ones with the Playtex Variety Pack, and I am sure he would have appreciated the on-the-go ease of the Playtex Nurser with Drop-Ins (rather than struggling with the mess of our “better at home” bottles)
And to have a community like the Playtex Mommyville site where Moms and Dads can ask questions and get advice (and GREAT savings!), that would have made a huge difference to us. Click to find out MORE!
