I used to drown myself in books. I would dive in and not surface for hours, or sometimes days.
It got so bad that my husband made me vow not to bring a book with us when we went on holidays.
I would disappear (which was “apparently” not the purpose of our holiday)
So, as with breaking any bad habit, I went cold turkey. I over corrected my behaviour to the point that I haven’t picked up a book in weeks.
I longingly look overt at my nightstand, the pile of pretty book covers flashing in the light, and stories just waiting to unfold and becoming real in my mind.
Maybe it this time I can just start slow, and learn to manage my problem? Perhaps just limiting myself to a chapter a night would help? Or if I started reading more “educational” books, rather than just a great Fiction novel?
I think I can do it, really I do. So this is how I am going to start:
First off, I am dipping my toe into the waters of Almost Snow White by Jeffery Blount. Heading back to 1940’s virginia to connect with Anne Sprately, a mulatto by way of rape. It is a nice slim book, perfect for getting my reading back in shape.
Next up Fielder’s Choice by J. Mark Hart. This one was heading my Dad’s way for Christmas, but maybe, just maybe I should check it out first? This time it is back to the 60’s in Birmingham Alabama to read about civil rights and Vietnam. Hmmm, maybe I should get a cup of tea and settle in?
And if Hubby complains, I will grab my copy of The Joy of Financial Security by Donna Skeels Cygan. I mean, even a chapter in and I have already made some changes to how we spend (and save) our money! Must say as well, you know you are nearing 40 when you have the Joy of Financial Security, instead of the Joy of Sex beside your bed! How things change!
Check out Donna’s site as well. She does weekly book clubs and has all sorts of awesome info and resources there for those of us who want a little more info on how to manage our money!
So tell me, what is on YOUR night stand tonight, and are you ready to dive in? If you want to check out one of the books I have recommended above, just click the links and grab yourself a copy!
