We don’t get a lot of opportunities for girls days in our family, especially lately. With a 4 year old boy who want’s to be a part of EVERYTHING, and the last 2, 4, 10 months spent moving ( or preparing to move) girls time is a rarity, and that is what makes it so special.
As a parent, having one on one time, or special moments with each of our kids is important. It allows us to focus in a little clearer on what they need, how they are doing and to create moments and memories.
Taking the girls off island is always a treat, and while it is usually used for logical, productive and necessary trips, we also try and build in a little fun.
And it is no small feat either, with a ferry ride, ferry waiting, and driving involved there is lots of room for meltdowns (or laughter)
The girls and I made best use of our time taking glamour shots in the car. . . aren’t we beautiful!
And then off for lunch. We had a few choices, but the girls saw the signs showing off Wendy’s new salads, and it was on the right side of the road for this non-city driver to make an easy exit, so we headed in that direction.
I remember Wendy’s from “back in the day” We went there when my sister got the choose the restaurant since her name was Wendy! My mom loved the salad bars and I found it neat to know that they were the leader in the salad biz and were the first to bring them to quick service restaurants over 30 years ago.
We loved the 3 new flavours they have added, and were impressed to see Wendy’s keeping up with the times by including the fancy “not your quick service” ingredients in them like edamame, cashews and a taco style chili.
We tried two of the new salads, the Taco Supremo Salad and the BBQ Ranch Chicken Salad, and were impressed at the hot serving of chili and seemed to come straight out of the pot and the chicken was fresh and warm as well, which added the perfect compliment to the salad.
And of course, as we were filling our bellies, and complimenting our meals with a Frosty, I was feeling better knowing that the 3 new salads are 50% lower in fat grams, 29% lower in sodium, and 61% lower in saturated fat than previous. Whew, because we might have ordered poutine as well!
Thank goodness they service full AND half sized portions! We were able to order a selection (and there might have been some switching around going on there as well)
And as we ate, we talked. We chatted about their new bedrooms in the new house and what more we could do to make it feel like home. We talked about the new baby chick that just hatched and how great it would be to have more. And then we rotated salads, and they both tried my chocolate frosty, and we talked some more.
And I exhaled. For the first time in months years, I exhaled. I relaxed into my two girls and enjoyed their company. I watched them eat (and eat and eat, as little growing girls will do) and when one of them pulled this face. . . .
And that was the face that made sure we went home with baby chickens, cause that is just what you do on a girls day out.
But, first I made them eat their lunch! They shared back and forth, enjoying the BBQ Ranch chicken with the fresh corn and tasty backyard BBQ Ranch Dressing made with real buttermilk and parmesan cheese (and just enough ancho chili peppers to give it a kick). And there might have been a fork war over the Applewood smoked bacon. . but it was hard to tell they moved so quick. Between bites of the 100% premium all white chicken breast meat that is freshly grilled on site, they scarfed daintily nibbled on the Taco Sumpremo Salad.
It wasn’t one I thought they would love, but even my picky eater (the eldest) ate it with gusto. With big chubby beans, meaty chili and tangy salsa… oh and the coveted side of sour cream, this one went down – and fast!
The girls even brought the additional nacho chips home for dad (lucky guy)
So, for your next girls day out (even if it is with your girlfriends, not your daughters) consider grabbing a Wendy’s fresh salad . . . you never know what your conversation will inspire!
And I must say, this little video kinda had me thinking of my girls and our lunch out. They shared a room for years, and I can only imagine the stories they will have when they are adults. And perhaps you will end up with a few baby chicks yourself! Trust me, it sure makes the ferry ride fun when you have a box of these with you in the car! And I never would have caved so easily had my belly not been full and my mind content that at least the girls had eaten SOME vegetables that day!
