With Big kid at school, and the littlest at preschool again after getting back on his feet from a neck injury, it meant that the middle one, still recovering from the flu, had the house (and her mom) to herself for the day!
I had this little surprise stashed in the cupboard for her, thinking it might be a fun activity one day. We have my parents coming for a visit next week, and my dad: a former high school chem teacher, would also probably love the chance to get all “Sciencey” with his grandkids.
I figured we would set it up, and check out the slides, chat about it a little . . . but I didn’t expect her to get totally inspired.
The Nancy B’s Science Club Microscope is made for girls 8+, in an effort to inspire them to science. They also have a great variety of other “science” equipment for sale on their site, including an Aquascope (for looking underwater) and a moonscape. The microscope was easy to set up, and use and my 8year old had it figured out in now time.
I left her to explore the slides that were included with the set, until moments later she came bursting into my office brimming with IDEAS.
“Mom, can we look at pollen with this?” (Our cars are currently covered in yellow pollen from the trees)
So, off we go, blank slide in hand, to grab some pollen.
She was able to knock some pollen onto the slide and then was able to use the magnifying settings to zoom in and get a look.
It kinda blew her mind.
A few days later now and my little girl is still outside searching for interesting things to collect.
The microscope comes with pre-loaded slides, as well as some blanks so you can source your own bits to look at. With 2 lights, it allows for easy viewing and the included keepsake journal features 22 pages of fun science experiments for kids and activities from observation to creative writing & drawing.
It is definitely inspiring an interst in science for my daughter.
