Our kids are pretty fortunate. Lots of wide open space, fresh food, most of it grown locally (or in our backyard) on the table and clean clothing and shoes on their feet.
But being raised with access to all of these amenities and opportunities just gives us more reason to remind them that they ARE fortunate and that they are a very small percentage of kids in the world who aren’t provided the same opportunities.
During our trip to St. Lucia last year we spent time exploring the island and chatting about opportunities. They saw the small one room homes that families lived in, and clearly understood that the goat tied up in the front yard wasn’t a pet, or even for milk. . . it was being fattened up for meat.
Our kids are becoming more and more aware of the realities of the world and what they can do to help others who aren’t as fortunate as us.
That is why, when companies and brands also try to bring awareness about projects and charitable opportunities, I support their message.
Sears Canada does an amazing job of supporting local and international charities and organizations. They recently made a multi year, 5MILLION dollar commitment to help fight childhood cancer! And now they are helping bring awareness to Plan Canada’s “Because I’m A Girl” campaign. (click the button to check out the products)
100% of the proceeds from sales of the shirts and totes will go back to “Because I’m A girl” to be invested back into Bangladesh to provide education and community programs for girls. The shirts are now only $14.97 and the totes are $9.97.
And the tops and totes are CUTE (and even my daughters think so)
Being aware of HOW you can help is one huge part of actually taking the step in helping. Bringing the conversation home to our kids, be it through a t-shirt, an experience in your community or a show on the television, all allows us to talk about what we can do to support others who need it.
Raising good humans matters! Remember, the kids we raise today WILL be the stewards of the future. Teach the ones you have well, and be sure to make them global humans who are able to give back and contribute! I know it is important to me, and giving back is becoming even more important to my kids!
What do you do to give back to your community? And how do you share the message with your kids?
