I got “the call” from school yesterday that one of my darlings was sick. I went off and rescued her and have kept her home again today.
And it is a weird sick. She is lethargic, and feels “off” but isn’t too sick to move. As she says, as soon as she gets up to do something, she is tired, but when she is laying in bed, she isn’t.
Hmmmm.
But what can you do. Sometimes we ALL need a day off, don’t we?
And I must say, I have kind of enjoyed having her home. We don’t get a lot of chances to hang out and “just be” with each other, and even if it is a sick day, it still counts as quality time.
She is a big reader, and I have kept her library stocked with some of my old faves. She was deep into Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH, which was one of my favourite childhood books. I read it about her age, and was torn to bits by the loss of Mr. Frisby and the spooky Great Owl and the (heartthrob) Jonathan.
I must have read that book dozens of time.
So, as we snuggled down on the couch today, ready to sink into a show and a few moments of silence before the “little kids” got home. . . The Secret of NIHM flashed before my eyes. Netflix has it on, and it was my first choice of shows to watch with my girl.
I was immediately back in 5th grade, worrying about my scrawny knees and horrible perm (who lets their daughter get a perm like that anyway). And my daughter was right there with me.
I am always blown away by the dejavu an old movie can give you. The exact feelings you remember having at the scary parts, and yes, the little character crushes (ghostbusters anyone?)
And to be able to relive these moments with our kids, and give them a taste of what life was like for us, what we thought was “Totally Rad” , well that is just awesome (especially for them!) Especially since our hair is usually better than it was at 10, and we are SO much more comfortable in our own skin!
Check out the awesome old school shows that Netflix Canada has for you! Maybe grab yourself a pair of highwaisted jeans and some pop rocks and relive some old memories with the family this weekend.
