I remember that moment, standing in the bathroom and looking at the first positive pregnancy test. We hadn’t been trying long and my brain couldn’t fathom what was happening. Like 59% of Canadians, we had “pulled the goalie” and planned for conception, but it was still a surprise that it had actually “worked”.
I was all alone with my big news as Hubby wasn’t home, so I had a warm bath and balanced my little test stick on the edge and just stared.
I stared at the two lines, and then closed my eyes and allowed the excitement to wash over me.
Pregnant. Me.
I never wanted kids when I was younger, not until I met my hubby and the broodiness started filling me. As the years ticked by and we were delayed first by financial reasons and then my medical reasons, I started to worry that my disinterest in making this a life plan was going to remove the opportunity all together.
I didn’t know about babies, I hadn’t done years of babysitting when I was a teen and had, instead, jumped into the pool and taught swimming lessons.
So, at least little baby would be a good swimmer, right?
I had never changed a diaper.
Ever.
I was approaching 30 and leaping into a world unknown.
I slowly pulled my body out of the bath, already imagining morning sickness and backaches, and dried off, preparing for hubby to arrive home.
This was a road we were going to travel together, bumpy, expensive and a turn off the path we were currently on.
And we were ready.
Hubby was as shocked as I was (but possibly impressed with his “swimmers” cleverness) and lying there that evening, with my partner by my side, we daydreamed about our new life.
Our new adventure as parents.
10 years later, and 3 kids in the baby moon has been over for years, but the joy of being a parent never fades. Not even through the late night feedings, the sibling arguments and the bone deep exhaustion. Being a parent is the best decision we ever made. . .
According to a recent national survey commissioned by Best Buy Maternity Nest, a whopping 82 percent of Canadian parents are still making babies the old fashioned way, right at home, just like I did. We are planning for our babies, from conception on, so once you have that little stick’s stamp of success, make sure you use the resources available to plan for the rest of your adventure into parenting.
There are a million little decisions during that parenthood that defined our experience. A million tiny choices from what stroller to get, to breast vs bottle. Choosing paint colours, car seats, and safety gates. . . all of these come with needed research and detailed questions.
