I hatched a chick, all on my very own.
It was momentous.
Perhaps even more exciting than the birth of my kids?
Ok, maybe not.
Little egg was peeping and starting to hatch, but our mama hen had decided she was done with babies. Her last hatch didn’t go so well (aka baby chick didn’t make it) and after that loss, and the loss of one of our 4 week olds, and then the loss of our beautiful hen Skipper. . . well, I needed to try.
I had little egg snuggled into my maxi dress all morning, warm enough, but not hot. As she hatched I was able to watch the whole thing, included enveloping that new born baby back into my dress after the hatch.
Obviously I am now OVERLY attached to our little addition. . . fingers crossed we can get grumpy mama to accept her with the big chicks and life goes on as planned.
Otherwise, I guess we have a new baby in the house!
Check out my video of her live hatch on Youtube!
Little one has been hanging with us as momma hen isn’t welcoming her back . . but I don’t think the kids mind! Enjoying a sunbeam is her fave activity so far!
Time will tell if we can get her back with the chickens. . . but this little one has a special tug on our heart, so we are less likely to risk her to the natural cycle of things.
more updates to come!
