I believe in balance. In all things. That means not freaking out over the mini chocolate bar for dessert, and spending the odd rainy saturday curled on the couch with the kids watching movies.
But balance needs to work both ways, as we know, and our little dude hasn’t quite figured that out yet.
Our girls adapted to me consistently popping vegetables on their plates and slowly but surely increased their healthy choices in food as the days, years and months progressed. Now the two of them will try “mostly everything” although they do have their “no go” rules, unique to their tastes.
But our little dude, he never got the memo.
Almost age 5 and he STILL battles at every meal. My well meaning mother tried herself a year ago, saying “I’ll spend the time” and we will get him to eat veggies.
Alas, the little fellow got a heavy dose of stubborn from both his mom and his dad, and this is one battle he won’t give in on.
Veggies taste funny. And meat . . . how could he ever eat a real live animal?
And so we find our ways to make it work. Sneaking “Hippie Dust” (or nutritional yeast for all you city people) into his cheese quesdilla helps to add a vegetarian source of B12 (for our non meat eating son) As well, 2TBS of nutritional yeast has more protein than a large egg or 1 oz of beef. Add to it that nutritional yeast is high in fibre and a source of folic acid, it kinda makes sense to put it on EVERYTHING.
And if you just sprinkle a TINY bit, they will never know.
Eating by candlelight also tends to distract from what is on his plate. SOMETIMES I can sneak something in without him seeing it under the glare of the regular lights.
And of course, adding in supplements as we can! Our little fellow needs food to be fun, and delicious while I need his food to supply him with nutrition and benefits.
And thats where the gummies come in.
My kids always begged for “fruit snacks” in their lunch, we balanced it out by including their morning vitamins into their lunch kit instead.
Tasty snacks WITH the benefits of vitamins and minerals that they might be lacking, and NO arguments from my crew about eating them.
In fact, it is more about not eating TOO many!
