How much lego is too much lego?
The answer?
You can never have enough lego.
Ever.
This is the answer my son gave me when he added “more lego” to his letter to Santa. “You can NEVER have enough mom” and I get it, I do.
I was a barbie girl growing up and you could never have too many barbies, or too many outfits or too many accessories. This fascination has now evolved into shoes, handbags and “smelly body creams” for me.
My hubby was a mechano kid, obsessed with building and creating, constructing crazy critters out of bits of metal and wire. If you were to walk into his workshop today you would see that his youthful love of this toy has become a current obsession with owning a million variations of the SAME SCREWDRIVER.
And wood. He hoards would (apparently you can NEVER have enough bits of spare wood – much like Lego, you always need the size of piece you can’t find)
There are some things that you can NEVER have enough of. Where the more actually expands the uses of the toy (or hobby).
So this year I enter another holiday with a wish list of “lego”, for the little boy who’s room is already a lego minefield that I need to navigate in the dark hours after putting him to sleep. Another stack of boxes with flashy pictures on the outside and instruction booklets 40 pages thick. And a little boy who will work his way through the step-by-step on christmas morning (and most of the afternoon) until he has created his masterpiece.
And then it will break.
The first time is always the hardest. An accidental fall off the sofa to shatter the tiny bricks across the living room floor, or the blind dog that gingerly makes her way across his bedroom, crushing towers and boats under her furry feet.
But once the he has mourned these creations, the booklets will be tucked away and the pieces will end up in the blue bins, ready to be made into his own creations and while they may not hold the beauty and glory of their original design, they will keep him busy for hours (blessed hours of quiet time for ME) and expand his creativity and engineering skills immensely.
And I can see it now. My 30year old little dude, master architect, creating cherished designs worldwide, all because of lego.
Or, fail that, I guess we will have another man who hoardes screwdrivers, remembering his days of stacking coloured bricks in his bedroom.
Because you can never have too much lego.
