We are so lucky that where we live spring comes earlier than most places. Usually by mid-february we are getting warmer days and the garden is coming back to life, and by mid march it is t-shirts, and sometimes even shorts and tanks.
This year April came with its share of rain (which living in a drought zone we welcome) but it also came in HOT. We were bathing suit clad by early april, and the garden BURST forth with colour.
Spring on the farm is one of our BUSIEST seasons. Every weekend, and every opportunity is used to work on the farm and prepare ourselves for summer. There is fencing to fix, gardens to turn over, barrows and barrows (and barrows) of chicken manure to move.
Add to that prepping all the fruit trees and bushes, planing the veggie starts and seeds, and all over EVERYTHING.
We scrub the winter off the chicken coop, and the goat pen and the decks and patios, and we assess how the farm came through the winter, removing dead trees, and burning through the last piles of brush.
We haul firewood into the sun, so it has a time to dry before we need it next winter and we prepare for birth.
Baby chicks, baby goats and this year, even orphaned baby bunnies.
The pantry gets cleaned in preparation for this years canning, and from top to bottom we do as much as we can in the gentle spring heat so we are slaving away in the hot summer sun.
After all the effort of our springtime work, we are left with a garden that is lush and beautiful, and veggies and fruit ready to fill our bellies (in a few more months)
And much like we take a deep clean, and hard work approach to our farm, we do the same to our bodies at the spring time. The heavy sweaters are packed away and our bodies come out of hibernation.
Hard work sweats the winter from our souls, and we crave fresh foods, green salads and clean insides!
In Traditional Chinese medicine, the liver has its dominant action in the spring. Which is so fitting, since it is our primary organ of detoxification! So as we “detoxify” our farm from a winters hibernation, so should we do the same to our bodies.
Naturopaths often recommend a “Hypoallergenic Diet” as a great way to kick-off a detox program. If you would like to try it out, click here for some general guidelines. If you have any medical concerns, please discuss this with your healthcare practitioner first.
And the Orange Naturals Liver Tincture has your “liver covered” as you start your de-tox process and give your health a fresh start, but to keep up to date with all their latest news, subscribe to their newsletter for health tips and tricks for the whole family.
