It has been years since we have had a new baby in the house, but the memories are still fresh. Every time I see a pregnant mama, or a newborn, I can remember the exact feel of fatigue, body discomfort and general haze that takes over everything.
There were a few pieces of advice that stuck with me through three babies, hand me down bits that helped me survive, with my sanity (mostly) intact.
The Baby Always Comes Back
My Grandmother told me this one fairly early on with my first. She said, anytime anyone ever asks to hold the baby, you say YES. If they ask to feed the baby, change the baby, play with the baby, walk the baby, or talk to the baby, say yes. At the end of the day, the baby will always come back to you, and you will always be its safe harbour. Take these moments when the come to catch a breath, stretch your back and have a hot drink. Soon enough the baby will be back in your arms and people will stop asking.
It WILL go fast
No matter WHAT you are feeling right now, it will not last. The pain is momentary. The fatigue, that does go away as well. This is just a stage in a long and wonderful life, so don’t dwell on the rough moments, very soon you will come up for air. Enjoy the baby feet, and being a human couch for your child. Enjoy the fact that you didn’t get anything done. Soon you will have time on your hands, and projects completed, and date night again. This will not last, so don’t hurry it along.
This IS the Best Time of Your Life
I know, how can anyone say that? I get it. You are covered in baby poop, your boobs are leaking and you haven’t had a solid nights sleep in MONTHS. While you are immersed in it it is fairly impossible to even consider that this is the best time of your life.. but it is. You are their everything. The centre of their universe. You have an ultimate purpose to your days, even if it seems like you don’t do anything all day long. You are the reason they breathe, and eat, and sleep, and one day, you won’t be. This moment of chaos is perfect, so see the beauty in it, even if just for a moment.
And moms, when you have a moment, take it.
