It is the whole what came first, the chicken or egg question again, but as I spend another day on our farm I start to wonder, were we ALWAYS this weird?
Or did we get weird because we got chickens?
Because we are weird now. . . really weird.
Here are 10 reasons chickens make you weird(er) and why that is so awesome
1. Flying Ant Season is the best time of year
When the flying ants come to hatch, the kids and I grab a chicken and together chase down the ants to catch them in flight. It is awesome and hilarious and completely weird. Just make sure you pick a GOOD chicken, otherwise you will lose (and so will the chicken)
2. Naming chickens can be exhausting, but fulfilling
But it is completely necessary. Otherwise, how will you tell them apart? Or talk about them? Or call them for a snack?
3. The worry. All the worry
Worry about everything. Are they sick? Are they old? Are they happy? Constant worry.
4. Playing dinner table games “Who is your favourite chicken”, “Which chicken would have super powers”
Yes. frequently. We also try and name all the chickens (we have 47, so this is harder than it seems)
5. Talking to the chickens… it happens
See, we need to talk to them when we wake them up in the morning, when we feed them scraps or sometimes when we are cashing them out of the newly planted meadow. Talking to (or screaming at) them is necessary.
6. Talking ABOUT the chickens. It happens TOO much
If you have ever stood in a room with me, I am guessing we have talked about chickens. I might have even made you feel uncomfortable because I went on and on way beyond what would be considered polite. I’m sorry, but it will probably happen again, but its okay if you just walk away.
7. Singing them to sleep. (I would never do this. nope.nope.nope)
Okay, seriously, I don’t do this. But my daughter does. I found her doing it one night and she said that she notices it calms them down… Okay. That might be even a little too weird for ME.
8. Bathing them. But only when they are dirty
When you are dirty you have a bath right? So… what’s the problem here?
9. Always wanting MORE chickens. One is never enough
Chickens are social creatures, they NEED MORE CHICKENS in the flock. Plus, more chickens, more eggs. And more compost. More chickens is just more awesome! (BUY CHICKENS!!)
10. Chicken clothing. . . because, CHICKEN clothing!
It is out there, and it is awesome. Now, I haven’t braved wearing it off the farm, but I feel super chicken friendly when I wear it here.
