Firsts are pretty miraculous things. First Birthday’s. First Anniversaries. First dates even. They all hold a certain specialness to them, a celebration of survival and success.
I remember our first anniversary, the only time we actually celebrated our wedding date in the last 14 years and the starchy awkwardness of that moment. The understanding we were stamping in time our success of the past year and our future years together.
And then, when the kids started arriving, we had birthdays (and more and more birthdays) but that first one always sticks.
We started big with our first child (as you always do) and brought out the family and extended family to celebrate. I remember trying to get her chubby little baby arms into a clean little outfit and knowing that she would be a mess by the end of the party. I did make a chocolate zucchini cake, in my attempts to be a “good mother” and get something healthy into her that day.
After that we had first’s for the other two, but none were quite as involved as for our first child. A first for a first has even more power!
And celebrating our firsts should continue. Our first year in business, our first on Saltspring. Our first (next year) in the new house. Firsts ARE momentous and should give us reason to appreciate more about where we are, what we are doing and how far we have come.
