Over the summer we sometimes slip into “not so good” habits. We sleep in, and then stay up late. We spend our days lounging beachside, escaping the heat, instead of being active in the fall weather. And we probably eat a few too many “snacks” with all the picnics we are having.
But with September here, it is time to re-ignite our GOOD habits, remind our bodies what it feels like to wake up and get moving, and create the rhythms and routines we need for health and wellness.
Here are my TEN tips for getting BACK into the groove, and regaining control of your days with good, healthy habits.
-
Set the alarm.
I know, alarms are terrible things, especially after sleeping in all summer! They do help you get started with the day, and give you enough time to get all those mounting “September” things done. Start getting yourself back into rhythm but turning your alarm back 15 minutes each day, and don’t forget to go to bed earlier as well! You do need sleep!

Get back in the kitchen
After a summer of BBQ’s and chips and dips it is time to get back in the kitchen and not just for tonights dinner, but to prepare meals for all those crazy busy fall days coming up. I love to create a few “soccer night” meals that we can pull out and bake so the kids can have a healthy meal no matter WHAT time they arrive home from their activities.
-
Clean out the fridge
A summer of sticky watermelon juice doesn’t do anyone any good. Clean out the fridge, recycle expired bottles (talking to you salad dressing) and give everything a clean wipe down. Now, fill it back up full of fresh seasonal fruits and veggies and great after school snacks for those hungry kids!
-
Scrub the bathrooms
Ugh bathrooms. Fall is the PERFECT time to give it another deep clean. Get it disinfected, scrub around the toilet base, and refresh your soaps, towels and other hygiene items. This is also a great time to check expiries on any beauty products and refresh! Since taking the #PURREL30 day challenge we have gotten in the habit of not only putting a push bottle of hand soap in the bathrooms, but adding a bottle of PURELL hand sanitizer as well! Making it easy and within reach helps the kids to create the healthy habits that can help reduce the spread of bacteria.
-
Tidy your desk
Back to school, and back to work. Start the fall off right with a clean desk, a fresh calendar and a mind prepared to tackle the projects ahead! Create a space to make lists for your upcoming work, and go through the lazy paperwork from the spring, either tossing (if it is passed importance) or dealing with it.
-
Turn OFF the tech
Stop with the 11pm movies, curled up on the sofa and make a rule to turn off your tech each night. This will help clear your mind for the busy days ahead, and get you to bed earlier! If you really need to decompress, read a book before bed, or play a game with the kids! And trust me, if you turn off the tech, the kids will too!
-
Plan ahead
Before you know it you will be neck deep in kids activities, school volunteering, and seasonal events! Before you get carried away saying YES, make a plan. Decide what you actually have time for and prioritize the activities. Fall is still a time to embrace blustery days, make apple pie with the kids, and curl up in front of the fire! Don’t over schedule yourself (or your little’s) and be realistic about what you can do, while still maintaining your balance.
-
Prepare for the worst!
With cold and flu season coming up, and the kids back in the schools trading germs, it is time to restock the medicine cabinet with the medicinal and homeopathic products you love! While you are at it, add PURELL hand sanitizer to the kids backpacks, the car, and around the house to help reduce the spread of those nasty illness-causing germs!
-
SWEAT
All summer I sweat because of the heat, but now that the weather has cooled my bodies wants to sweat from exertion. Get outside, or to the gym and remind your body that you are the master and together you can do amazing things!

Find your peace
With the kids back in school, you need to remind yourself each day that you have time. You have time to relax and have a cup of tea. You have time to go for a walk, or run or take a moment of quiet in the day. You do not NEED to rush, if you make a plan and prepare for the coming months. Embrace your days, the chaos doesn’t last.
