The weather hit us over the weekend. Crisp cold mornings, foggy days and rain. Since we moved into the house the days have been dry and sunny. So dry in fact that we went through a water shortage and period of “drought” Bare feet weren’t bothered by the wooden floors, and the sunshine kept our old house warm and dry.
Very warm.
So warm that I felt justified that the day we moved into the house we pulled out all the floor rugs and “re-homed” them. We love wood floors and hate to see them covered up.
We also took down the think heavy curtains over the beautiful heritage windows. We wanted light, and we wanted to admire the view of our acreage.
But now that the weather has changed I am reminded about the reasons for curtains and carpets. The floor is chill beneath our feet and the single pains in our antique windows do very little to keep out the cold.
In fact, the kids have pointed out that the house is colder inside than it is outside.
And we have a lot of floor. 3000 square feet of hardwood, plus stairs up and stairs down. And if the floors are this cold in October, I can only imagine what they will be like in January.
So, we are making a plan. A new, higher efficiency wood burner is on order (and fingers crossed it arrives soon) we are stocking up on thick, cozy slippers, and the warm blankets are being pulled out of the storage trunks.
And area rugs.
We need new area rugs.
And as I search for rugs (and found some great ones online) that will fit our style and still provide warmth to our tender toes I don’t feel regret about ditching the old ones. They weren’t “us” and we needed to define our space. And often when you move into a new-to-you home you need to strip out the old owner and start fresh. We didn’t want 40 year old rugs under our kids bumbs as they played Apples to Apples in the living room. This house is a new start for us, and as much as we are fixing the land outside the house, we want to make sure the inside is clean and “smells like us”
Even if that means we have cold feet for a few more weeks.
