With the second week of December approaching and time ticking towards Christmas, not only are families in a rush to enjoy the season, and finish their shopping, we are also keen to squeeze in a few more doses of appreciating and support others in need.
This holiday season, the Boys and Girls Clubs of South Coast BC (BGC) look forward to giving its 12,000 deserving kids and families one of the most important gifts of all: dignity.
BGC will host an array of events, including Breakfasts with Santa, Club parties with gifts and stockings, community dinners, and even an appearance in the Roger’s Santa Claus Parade.
“We know that it is extremely hard to ask for help and to admit that you can’t provide for your family, or that you’ve hit rock bottom,” says BGC President and CEO, Carolyn Tuckwell. “We know that some of our kids and families have extraordinary needs, and we do everything we can to help. When we do, that help is delivered by the BGC staff person that they know and trust the most so they know they won’t be judged. Given quietly and discreetly, the unnamed gift is dignity.”
So, much like Santa’s workshop, there is also a lot that goes on behind the scenes to make sure that the holidays actually exist for kids and families in the community. Staff and volunteers work tirelessly to prepare extra gifts, and life essentials so that celebrations can happen everywhere, including in homes where families are struggling. The result of these efforts is ultimately joy, hope and gratitude.
When donors choose to give to BGC, gifts will directly support kids and families with programs and services for the coming year. In giving, donors are not only empowering the community but also showing every child that they matter. That gift of dignity lasts a lifetime.
