We are getting old around here. Older, a bit lazy some days, and definitely more interested in eating the treats over the good stuff.
And by “we” I mean me, and the dogs.
But the fire is warm, and the cushions are comfortable, and outside it is cold on our paws, and the truth is, sometimes it is easier to just stay warm and toasty inside, than keeping pets active in the winter.
And while my toasty little seal shaped girl would be happy to spend her day lounging around the house, our male spaniel has a bit more spring to his step and he forces the BOTH ofus outside to explore the day.
He wants to run through puddles, chase chickens and get winded breathing in the cold air. He drags us (sometimes literally) outside to the sunshine to move our bodies at least once a day, and for that we are grateful.
He wants us to sweat, and move and be healthy and take breaks, and keep active, and he is right. Despite the cold temps, and the biting wind, once we get moving we both feel better.
I know for me it loosens my mind and relaxes my shoulders. A lot of the problems I was working through on my couch seem much more manageable when I am outside for a walk in the sunshine. I am less obsessed over answering my emails (and checking them over and over again) and take a moment to just breathe.
And for our blind little girl, she has a chance to sniff to her hearts content.
A short walk, and we all return home feeling a little better about ourselves, and the couch or cushion seems a little more earned!
Keeping our pets active in the winter can be hard, but the truth is THEY don’t really mind the cold or the rain as much as we do, and by keeping them walking and playing we will keep their heart healthy and help them live longer lives.
