We left the island today. We have only been here a couple weeks, but we popped off today to do a load of little errands and bring some bunny buddies back home.
It was a beautiful day, and the girls first Friday off school in their 4 day school week. It felt right to make it momentous.
We hit the city and the chaos was overwhelming. We started in on our errands and slowly start knocking items of the list in our hurry to hit the spca and get the hell home.
The kids were complaining of the noise and the cars and the distance between points. We were all anxious to get back to our little oasis in the trees.
With bad attitudes mounting and irritability at its peak we changed course and went directly to the bunny haven.
We have been on the bunny hunt since our daughter stated that was all she needed to make this transition manageable. I am a long time SPCA supporting, even giving up my weekends from age 9-13 volunteering. The kids spent hours searching the online data base, assessing and listing their favorite bunnies.
When we walked into the bunny room and saw the 60 bunnies waiting for adoption, it became clear that we had a difficult decision ahead of us. Hours later, with 4 for 1 bunnies loaded into boxes in the pickup we were making our way across the water, fuzzy noses twitching as the ferry docked.
Despite the horribleness of being in the city, and trust me I have some concerns about how quickly we became rural-minded, it was amazing to rescue these little critters. Three lovely REX sisters who were taken from inhumane cages and meant to be a coat and handsome Captain Fergus to help us manage this harem.
it felt good. It always feels good to rescue something, and not just buy it. Like the Charlie brown Christmas tree concept, it is finding something that needs you, as much or more than you need it.
And as the first pair of bunny teeth squeezed the flesh of my hubbies thigh, He said “I saved you, you little bugger… be happy about it” and we realize that in helping others, even bunnies… we are really helping ourselves.
So, the bunnies are here. They are a part of the family already and I don’t have to go back out into the real world for a while… and I guess I will deal with that when it happens.
Until now I will enjoy the fuzziness surrounding me…
