Airplane travel with kids isn’t supposed to be fun . . . just like long car journeys, hair brushing and visits to the dentist; it is one of those necessary evils in life.
I mean, even a single person, off on an amazing adventure doesn’t even like a long train journey.
And travelling a red eye, with a plane change, with kids . . . well, you kind of enter the dark side when you do that.
We left Vancouver on a rainy evening . . . leaving our jackets in the car anticipating the warm blast of air when we landed in St Lucia a mere 24 hrs later. We tried to think smart in our clothing choices (but failed somewhat). . .more on that later!
Midnight our flight left.
That is like “rock bottom meltdown” in kid time. We waited to board with a large wedding party going on the same journey as us (so luckily we weren’t going to be the loudest ones on the flight) and had little dude doze off about 10 minutes before boarding.
That was good!
He lasted until landing in Toronto – that was good too.
Him waking up as we were landing and absolutely freaking out (Seriously . . .imagine waking up to a plane gearing down and descending without any knowledge of boarding) was bad. Very bad.
His “soother free living” for the last two weeks ended amidst the screams of “where ammmm IIIIII”
It was totally worth giving in on the soother thing to stifle that noise.
So, we made it to Toronto. We found our new gate, and we went on the hunt for food (remember, these short flights don’t feed you and one can only live on G&T for so long) The flight was better than I expected. The kids slept most of the way, even if I didn’t and we were 1 flight closer to our super awesome vacation!
One step . . . of many in a 24 hr trip! Just one step . . .
