We like to start things earlier, just in case something comes up that will slow us down. So, our packing was started well in advance, the storage unit loaded with the items that we won’t need right away and the purging was purged. But still, here we sit, a few short days before the move… and it still seems like we have masses to pack.
It’s like that story of the rocks and the jar.
You put the big rocks in first, then fill in the gaps with the little rocks, and then add the buckets of sand to fill all the remaining spaces.
With packing, you get the non-daily items packed first (my theory is these should be sold blindly to the highest bidder… if you don’t use it for the last month, do you really need it at all?) Then you work your way through the seasonal stuff, and down to the niceties. Finally at the end you have the piles of daily use items.
The problem being, how do you pack those daily use items early? Cause you are using them every day right?
And why is it you are left with bags and bags of items to be tossed at the end of it all? Where did this trash come from?
So we pack, and pack. We start with detailed labeling and then when our one black sharpie goes missing, we end up with cryptic pink messaging on each box (stuff from girls desk- assorted, things for pets, etc.) The closer to the wire, the more desperate the labeling.
Eventually on the last day each box ends up being labelled “assorted”…. Just that! Mystery boxes that add that little bit of excitement to unpacking (hey honey, I found your razor!)
So we keep packing… and it seems to never end.
