I keep having to slow down and reminder myself that the little things matter. It is so easy to get caught up in the work that keeps coming in, the dirty floors in the kitchen, and the basic needs of all our 3 kids.
We have a lot on our plate, and it is very hard to make time for things that are URGENT.
This past September when I was invited to the Ooka Island Reading program I felt like it was a life ring thrown to our family. We weren’t focussing on our kids academics, and other things were taking priority. Our youngest was just starting grade 1, and could only JUST write his name. I felt that we had let him down and that without our support he was going to fall behind.
The Ooka Island program is an online reading app that helps and encouraged emergent readers. It is interactive and fun, and it works. (Read here to see why my son said it was BETTER than minecraft)
For 3 months my son has been using the app, and it is working. For 3 months the Ooka Island App has also reminded us that his reading comprehension is IMPORTANT, and that we are his partners in the process. We have stuck to his schools plan of reading every night before bed, and every single day work on the list of site words that come home from class. He has jumped from Level 1 to Level SEVEN in his site word list (something he is extraordinarily proud of)
He has improved.. Greatly improved.
And he is STILL improving.
Training him to use the Ooka Island Reading app was an important as it was training US. We made a few mistakes in the last few months but over time learned that doing the Ooka Island Reading app WITH him was an important factor in his success (and the Ooka Mist… lots of ooka mist)
Check out what Silas has to say about the Ooka Island Reading App.
You can download the app from the app store and get a free one level trial. From there if you decide to commit to the program like we did, it is $9.99 a month for a subscription. The team at Ooka Island recommends your child works with the app a min of 30 minutes, 3x a week to improve their reading comprehension.
But, if you KNOW you are going to love, enter to WIN a 1 year subscription to Ooka Island right here! Contest closes December 20th, and is open worldwide!
