Every now and then I like to think back to the start of something, the conception of an idea, so I can trace the journey that it went on to become… real.
That beginning moment when it is just a thought, an idea, without all the hard edges and details. A scribble really on a blank page, just the beginning.
Over the years my Hubby and I have created many things. From kitchens, to gardens, to business plans and life renovations. We have trusted in the process of creation, and followed the journey. We have jotted down ideas, sketched out plans. Scuffed our shoe around in the soft soil, outlying our growth.
As our kids are growing, we are now realizing how important it is for them to have the chance to explore ideas as well. To try things, make mistakes, and scratch out the bits that don’t make sense. Giving them ample space, time and supplies to define their process for this journey is the first step, guiding them while they are on it is the next.
My eldest daughter is orderly, tidy, planned. She creates lists, each with a tick box, and evolving plans. She starts at the beginning and finishes at the end. As she creates her plan, it is done with the overall picture in mind.
My middle daughter is a little more chaotic. Her ideas are explosive, often beyond the borders of reality. She reaches for the stars, and isn’t afraid to take risks. She would rather have a list of dreams without achieving any, than not try to reach for them at all.
These ideas they are sharing now will be the foundation of how they explore their life and their potential. Are they accepting that they will make mistakes? Do they allow their ideas to evolve and change over time to reach their potential? Or are they so sure of their path that they only need once chance to get it right?
When we look back on our journey, we see that every great path started with one step. Every story starts with a scribble, and every master plan has a laundry list of mistakes it was built on.
Empowering our kids to take chances and to make mistakes is our best way to show them that they are in control of their journey, that all they need to do is start. They need pads of blank paper, newly sharpened pencils, and your support to guide them as they make that first mark on the page.
These days, even with the world open to us with technology, sometimes just the process of opening a sketch book, or starting a new journal, is the thing you need to ground your ideas. Putting something “on paper” is a much different experience, more foundational and stable, than adding it to an online doc.
Right now Hilroy Canada wants to help you start. They are sharing #ScribbleStories, a variety of YouTube interviews that show the journey of how a great idea put on paper has been brought to life. They want to inspire people at every stage of their journey, from every background and industry, to start and imagine the potential of an idea put on paper.
