It’s foggy, wet and  muddy with a bone chilling damp coldness.  When I exhale my breath hangs in a cloud in front of me in the still cool air.  I am surrounded by fellow enthusiasts dressed in wool, goretex and rubber boots.  You guessed it, I’m at a youth soccer game on the WetCoast.

Soccer, the sport my hubby patiently insists on calling Football.  The one sport all 3 of our kids are passionate about.  Not indoor synchronized swimming in a heated aquatic centre, or gymnastics in a ventilated gym. It had to be soccer, pardon me, FOOTBALL, which is played from September to March in BC. The wettest, coldest months. In other more civilized provinces this sport is played from March until October. Now that makes sense, outdoor sports during the warm sunny months.  When I could be lounging turfside with a cool beverage instead of huddled under blankets holding an umbrella in my freezing hands.

Along with the numbing cold, comes wet, soggy, muddy uniforms.  This is dirt that clings to the slippery fabric and embeds itself in tightly woven socks.  More often than not we are carpooling with other families, so I have  to think ahead to  keep that smelly wet gear from stinking up the car, and making the drive more comfortable for everyone.

I always have a change of clothes for my kids, and even myself if it’s been particularly wet. Standing in the rain for over an hour, even under an umbrella, leaves your clothes feeling damp or downright wet. Having a pair of soft comfy sweatpants to pull on makes the drive back home much more comfortable.  Getting the players out of their muddy gear and into soft blankets keeps the backseat free of mud and warms little bodies too.
