We don’t really live and adventure filled life, I would call it more “peaceful” than anything. Quiet, mixed with intervals of hard work, and moment of laughter.
Most days in my life are good. We have a mix of things we love, a balance of chores. We wake up fairly happy, and go to bed content. We smile.
Good days are easy to come by. We know what makes our family tick, and we understand what each person needs to feel “good”.
But excellent days, those are rare. Days where kids have their smile plastered on them for HOURS. Days when, as you tuck them in at night, they actually THANK YOU for the day.
Yesterday we had an excellent day. An epic adventure.
We dragged the kids out of bed at 630am (horrific, especially on a Sunday), stuffed them into our truck and grabbed an early morning ferry.
We just told the kids we were taking them on an “adventure”
After 2 hours of driving, our secret remained, until we pulled into a simple fairground.
After losing 6 hens over the winter the kids were feeling a little low, so as we parked the car we let them know we were here for a chicken swap (think car boot sale, but with poultry)
Farmers slowly arrived, showing their “wares” as the kids walked from truck to truck, choosing their fowl friend to bring home.
Now, this is akin to walking into a pet store and telling your kids “go for it”
There may not have been a lot of quantity there that day, but with chickens you don’t necessarily need a lot, just the right ones.
The kids walked away with a few chicks, a couple pullets and I even grabbed myself 4 lovely laying hens!
A picnic on the back of the truck, and a 2 hour drive home (with the babies on their laps) and then an afternoon spent getting to know our 10 new friends, and settling them in.
Soccer on the meadow, and an easy dinner in front of a family movie, after tucking the baby chicks in, and the smiles were broad.
I have found that creating great days is easy, especially when you build your life around them. The excellent days are are sometimes simple to create, if we let them happen.
