These last few months our family has seen every bug out there. It seems every day someone else was sick, either with sniffles or full blown flu symptoms The last thing the hubby and I had on our minds was planning a holiday for March break. Plus, with the addition of our new goat friends leaving the farm for several days just wasn’t in the cards. So this year a “staycation” is our plan to break up the weeks without school.
For many people planning a staycation sounds daunting, how do you come up with things to do and places to go when you’ve already been there a dozen times? Well, you think outside the box. Sometimes that means handing the planning over to other creative little minds.
My youngest loves to just chill inside, and it can be a task to entice him to go on a long walk or hike with us. My plan is to ask him to plan a picnic for us and choose where to go. The criteria are it must be outside, and a long enough walk that the dogs will get some exercise too. We have several family friendly hikes nearby and the lake is always a hit with everyone. This will spark his interest and if he has planned it he will want to go! Also, being a choosy eater he will have to think about what foods to pack for the whole family to enjoy (I’ll be helping with that part).
We do have a small to do list to tackle as well, and with the added bonus of kids who enjoy helping around the property we should be able to get things done and entertain them as well. We always have chickens to care for and now goats to tend. Involving the kids in these chores takes the work off of us and gives the kids a sense of responsibility and knowledge about animal care. If we have burning to do we make it fun by roasting hot dogs, baked potatoes and of course marshmallows as a reward for a day of clearing the land to use it for the animals or a garden.
We will no doubt be hit with at least one rainy day, so planning for an “in day” is important. We don’t want the kids to just sit around on their tablets, and since they are all at varying ages for actual “playing” coming up with something we can ALL do is tricky. Everyone loves to eat, so making a meal together is a good place to start. Make your own pizza night is a family fave for us. We start early and make our own dough, and chop veggies and meats and cheeses so everyone can create their masterpiece! Lots of laughter and teasing about topping choices brings us all together and we end the evening with a game of charades and more laughter.
We can’t fill every day with planned activities; we just aren’t like that. Sometimes the kids just go outside to play. They jump on the trampoline, make chicken forts and just muck around and have fun getting dirty and doing kid stuff. So it isn’t really that hard to plan a staycation if you tap into the imaginations and creativity around you, you might be surprised at how much fun you have, not just the kids!
