Summer has been here with us in BC for a long time already. The kids were out of school mid June do to job action, and we aren’t sure if they will head back in September or not.
And honestly, summer is long enough already without tacking a bundle of extra weeks on at the beginning and end.
And the kids are getting bored of our standard rotation: Lake-hike-chickens-read-lake-hike-chickens-read.
As am I.
So we threw a party.
The girls invited over a few friends. we filled the table with snacks and got all crafty with some Doh Vinci. It felt nice to be doing something somewhat structured with the kids, instead of tossing our day up into the wind and working to keep boredom at bay.
The little girls (age 8) dove right in without a plan. They went wild with creativity and were aggressive with the Doh Vinci tools, and with their minds not caring about patters or layout, they found the easiest way to use the product for their little hands.
They would squeeze, and press, creating a solid covering over the craft product, and it looked pretty cool.
The big girls, well, they had plans. They practised (and practised) and chose their craft items with care. They looked at the guide books, and thought about the big picture of their design before unscrewing a lid from a single bottle of dohpaint.
And then they attacked with precision. Focussed and in control, they asked for tips on how to use the tools, and perfected the stamps included in the packaging.
They had fun. (lots of fun)
And they did a good job. The crafts they walked away with are awesome! The DohVinci art paint dries quickly (especially with our hot sun today) and seems long lasting.
We had a huge assortment of colours, so they had no restrictions on their creativity, and there was no fighting over who got the bottle of pink!
but mostly, it was a little fun for the kids, and a break from the “carefree” nature of summertime. There was structure, and snacks and a pick up time (very un-summer of us) and something to look forward to the week before, as parents balanced work and play, and kids were left to entertain themselves.
Each DohVinci kit came with a applicator gun and a set of 4 colours. The art projects were bits and bobs picked up from various art supply stores (or, if you are like us, the garden)
We had little dude participate as well, but it was a little advanced for him. . . he DID have fun with it though, and with a little help from mom, ended up being pretty happy with his project.
All the kids were pretty excited to take one their DohVinci Styler and extra colours to make other projects at home, and if you enter fast you can WIN:
