This is something we do ALL the time. Hubby has a cesear salad addiction, so it is one of our go-to’s for a side for dinner. We also do it for company and I am always amazed at the shocked (and impressed) expressions as I deftly whip up homemade croutons.
Fancy eh… I wish!
Seriously; homemade croutons are just little pieces of bread tossed and slowly toasted in oil. That’s it. Not fancy, not hard to make, not impressive. Plus, they taste about a BILLION times better than the store bought ones. Homemade croutons are crunchy on the outside, but soft in the middle. They can be a little bit salty, or have a kick of garlic if you like.
Best of all homemade croutons are cheap. Very, very cheap to make (especially if you have issues about eating bread crusts like I do!)
And honestly, I can NEVER remember to buy these things in the store (or to spend 4$ on a little weenie bag of them)
Now, don’t be scared and follow the simple directions below! This WILL change your life!
INGREDIENTS for HomeMade Croutons
Bread (or buns, fresh or even a little stale)
Olive Oil (or whatever you have on hand! I have used coconut oil, veg oil, anything. Just not butter!)
1. CUT UP BREAD
2. Sautee bread in hot pan with a few TBS of oil. (enuff oil to get all the bread slightly greasy)
3. Continue sautee-ing on low until all sides of the bread squares are toasty. The lower the heat, the crunchier the crouton.
4. Pop it on a salad and eat.
And for all you “fancy” peeps, you can add seasoning, or even a little parmesan cheese to your bread before you sautee. Explore and test things out. I mean, this is pretty simple and it is pretty hard to muck it up!
