This is the time of year that we tend to flip-flop between summer and fall.  One day the kids will be outside, running through the meadow, with dirty feet tracking dust and chicken feathers across the floor.  The next day the fires will be lit, and warm crumble will be in the oven, while the dust turns to mud.

I find this time a challenge.  Do I give into fall and start burning my scented candles? Or do I hold on to summer and pour another gin&tonic with fresh lemon, and keep the windows cracked for fresh air?

The scents and feelings of this time of year are so intermingled as well.  As the fires burn, the memories of Thanksgivings are there.  Those long, cool weekends where we would burn and clear our property, and then come in and collapse with a full bowl of hot soup and a mellow glass of wine.

But the summer scents are just as powerful.  The grass as it grows again, and the kids run through.  The dust bathing chickens, with that warm, healthy scent. And the sharp cedar smell that our deck throws, even years later when the sun bakes it under its heat.

There is a clear winner of course, at this time of year. I welcome change, and the freshness of new seasons.  I welcome transition, as it brings what we have usually been lacking.  Fall brings with her spicy orange, fresh, warm apples, and the chance to curl up and revisit that cupboard full of  boardgames.

Of course… I can always revisit summer if I need to, all it takes is shifting out one simple product in my cupboard.
