I enjoy curling up with the iPad and melting into a few fave series in the evening and usually this is a solo activity. Hubby and I have differing TV genres faves, and the kids enjoy … well, kid shows.
But this summer, the girls joined me on a bit of a media adventure as we started watching Once Upon a Time on Netflix. This was the first time we have been able to dive into a series, with my girls, and have it be appropriate (and entertaining) for all of us.
On rainy days we were able to turn off the cartoons and instead explore StoryBook. Imagining what it would be like to be in a fairy tale land, battling ogres or exploring the world with the handsome Hook (well, I think he is handsome, the girls not so much)
The blend of story lines and fantasy was perfect for us three girls, and while some of the complexity may be over my 8 year olds head, she loved the idea of a modern day Snow White roaming the suburbs!
I hadn’t expected to be able to look forward to a new experience with them like this. It has pushed me to think of them as individuals I enjoy and have things in common with, rather than “my kids” They are girls that have ideas, thoughts and passions all of their own. Girls who want to do THINGS with me, girl things. Special things.
So, we found our time this summer to curl up together, while I brushed their hair and we waited to see what adventures awaited us in StoryBrook and we gabbed and giggled as girls do.
Just the three of us.
(ps. Once Upon A Time is on Netflix right now. . . which means you can marathon the whole season without any commercial breaks!)
