The whole concept of a Leap Year seems pretty magical to me. A bonus day, just tossed in there at the end of the month… surprising us all every 4 years. I always feel like I should make the MOST of this Leap Year Bonus day.. do something special, or do a project that will have me catching up and getting ahead.
Now, our Leap Year “bonus day” lands on a Monday this year which isn’t great for family outings it IS great for “mom” projects!
Prep the Garden
I know. If you aren’t in the west this topic make frustrate you, but out here spring has SPRUNG and it is time to get the beans and peas in the ground for an early crop. Of course on our farm, “prepping the garden” means sifting the soil to remove the constant supply of shale and rocks, and working the last 6 months of chicken compost into something that is manageable. It is a heavy day of sweating and hauling and grunting, but with the reward of early veggies it is SO worth it!
Explore the Island
Even though we have been here for 3 and a half years there are still a few spots on the island that we have yet to explore. Most of them require a long hike UPHILL, so dragging the kids along would have been a nightmare! But, Leap Day is the perfect time to give it a try! Perhaps a “grownup picnic” including that bottle of prosecco we have stashed in the fridge is what we should bring along!
Clean that ONE cupboard
There is always ONE cupboard in your house (or drawer) that gets neglected over time and ends up being a bermuda triangle of items lost at sea. It is the spot that no one really knows WHAT it is for… but everything ends up there. Perhaps dragging over the kitchen stool (these cupboards are always up high or down low) and giving it the ole day long clean up is what is needed!
Prep for a Garage Sale
With spring in the air, and the wet of winter finally drying we are seeing all the “stuff” we stored last year and never used! Maybe I should spend my bonus day tackling these areas and getting items cleaned up and ready for a March garage sale? We always say we are going to do it… but it never happens (I think because it is SO MUCH work) but I know how good it felt to clean my bedroom closet and if I don’t have to stare at those items another year, I know i will feel great!
Whatever you decide to do with your Leap Year day, make it count! In my experience these things usually have me sweating, and then curled up in a hot bath at the end of the day, cursing my weak muscles!
Thankfully we have the easy action A535, a leap year days best friend! If you are planning on over doing it and making the MOST out of February 29th (like I am) I suggest a bottle of this, a warm bath and perhaps even a nice glass of wine to finish off this BONUS day!
