These days there seems to be a holiday for everything, and today, February 22 is no different. Today is national “Walking the Dog Day” and I have a few reasons why I think all of the dog owners should be celebrating!
Why you should celebrate Walking The Dog Day!
Relieves Stress
We all know getting active and moving relieves stress and (for me especially) getting outside clears my mind better than anything. When I am feeling overcome, my best choice is to click on the dogs lead and head off down to the shore for a wander. Something about getting outside with my spaniel with no purpose other than to “walk the dog” allows me to just be present in the moment. We can walk with no destination in mind, no required time limit, and just follow his nose to where it seems fit to take us.
Great for Your Heart
We all know that we should be moving every day! They say that 10,000 steps is a baseline goal, and being active for 30 minutes daily will be a step towards a healthy life. Getting outside to walk the dog, even though it is for a purpose other than exercising, STILL counts as exercise! For me it is the bonus activity of the day, and gets my heart beating (and legs moving) when I need it most!
Even Better for your pet
The win-win is that not only is this a great thing for YOUR body, it is also great for your pet! I know my spaniels love to curl up in a sunbeam (just like anyone would) but getting them outside for a walk is better for their body. Just like us pets can become inactive and obese, to celebrating a daily walk with your dog is not just good for the soul, but for BOTH of your bodies.
Meet New friends
It never fails, when you are walking a dog you come across as friendly and welcoming. It is a social thing to do, and in my experience, a great way to connect with your community! In fact, one day we left our old dog at home while we did our usual walk and we had people asking about him! People see you when you are outside walking your dog, and you become a part of their community.. and everyone needs that.
Making walking your pet is a necessary habit, and a requirement of owning a dog in my opinion! Even though we have 3 acres to roam and play and toss sticks, our dogs still get itchy feet and want to get off the property to explore every so often! Start today by celebrating “Walking the Dog Day” and see if you can inspire yourself to explore the world with a dog on a leash, and a activity for both of you!
