We don’t have tv where we are.
I mean, we have A tv – it just doesn’t get anything other than netflix.
Nor do we get a newspaper, or have a radio playing news. We get media updates from the internet, and only when we go looking for them. We also only allow in what we need to hear, we only read what we want to read.
Earthquakes, shootings and robberies are only a part of our life, if we let them in, or if they force their way into our lives.
And we don’t let them in , not in excess anyway. And, so far, we have been lucky and they haven`t broken down our door.
I see all these posts about “How to talk to kids about the school shooting” and, I just won’t. It was devastating, yes, but in our home, right now, we are surrounding our kids with safety and love and seasonal joy. We play Christmas music, we play games and we live.
This doesn’t mean that we are living in a bubble and ignoring realities, it just means we are choosing to surround ourselves (and our children) with good, with positive thoughts and with optimism.
See, I believe that this world is essentially good, and that the people in are full of good thoughts and caring feelings. I believe that we have choices, and that by putting our energy into good, we will cause it to spread.
In our media reduced home I happened upon a documentary on Netflix Up with a fussy toddler, it seemed like it would be appropriate to have running while he coughed and sneezed in the wee hours of the morning.
It reminded me that with optimism and trust, with expecting the best out of people and building relationships, there are people who are selfless, and deserving. That community is still alive and well and neighbors will support each other.
Having left the “big city” this is more and more apparent to me every day. Selling off an old Iphone case the purchaser left me the $ in the back of his car in a school parking lot. Just sitting there in the back of his car. In a HIGH school parking lot.
I know -that never would have happened in the city.
In these few days before christmas I hope everyone can focus on the positives in the world, turn their channels to something that will inspire them to optimism and then act.
Do something, anything to show that you too have a bit of faith that everything is going to be ok, you also believe that people are essentially good.
Because I do . . . and we might as well start somewhere.
